Social Issues

HIV/AIDS has had an impact on millions of humans around the world and has therefore caused a host of social issues. Because the disease has been prevalent in morevulnerable groups of people around the world, there has been much discrimination around associating certain ethhnicities with a larger likelyhood of getting HIV. This discrimination could also become significant when individuals are applying for jobs. There have been many instances where applicants that are HIV positive have been denies jobs. (#51) Another form of discrimination occurred when HIV was nicknamed the Gay Man's disease by people who believed that they were responsible for the distribution of the virus and that only they could acquire it. Early in the history of the disease, HIV was seen in more often in cases of gay men so HIV was incorrectly associated with them. It caused a multitude of social issues because it was derogatory and
negatively affected the lives of gay men. Others forms of this discrimination are lack of access to equal health care, denile of education to HIV positive children and detention fo HIV infected persons. Therefore, even though HIV/AIDS is a terrible epidemic which can ruin lives, we must protect these individuals and do our best that we can to take social issue into account when considering and researching HIV/AIDS.
