With such a grand and widespread topic as HIV/AIDS, there will always arise issues on the basis of research and possible treatments to the infectious disease that has been inflicted on millions of people around the world. Three types on issues that muct be addressed are ethical issues, legal issues and social issues. There is much controversy in the ethical world surrounding the potential for the Crispr/Cas9 technology in creating designer babes while in the legal world, privacy and confidentiality can cause huge arguments. Lastly, the tag of having HIV or AIDS can be detrimental to the social lives of ordinary citizens and can lead to discrimination on the basis of employment. Therefore HIV/AIDS research must be carefully monitored along the way to ensure that people are safe and that their rights are not violated. We will also be considering the views of Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, a doctor recognized with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his leadership in international research against HIV/AIDS, as well as Maria Mejia, an activist and woman living with AIDS, in order to see their take on the epidemic and how efforts to fight it have developed over the years.
